Weather | Clear night sky, light winds, dry, cold |
Location | High Stile |
Two walkers had spent the day walking on the Buttermere fells but ended up taking longer than they expected. As night fell, they found themselves in very steep technical ground descending the front of High Stile, having strayed slightly from the very indistinct path. As they began to get cold, tired and weak, they called 999 requesting Mountain Rescue assistance. The Team quickly located the walkers, finding one exhausted and in the early stages of hypothermia. Given their condition, coupled with a potentially long, treacherous stretcher extraction, the Team Leader enlisted the help of HM Coastguard Helicopter 936 who demonstrated some excellent flying to winch the exhausted casualty from the scene. Simultaneously the Team escorted the other casualty on foot back down to the valley where the two individuals were reunited at Gatesgarth Farm.

Two walkers were descending Gamlin End after working their way along the ridge from Red Pike to High Crag. As they began to drop towards Scarth Gap, one of the party suffered a painful leg injury and was unable to continue. The Team made the long, rough ascent from Gatesgarth, administered analgesia and packaged them for a short, but very steep evacuation to the waiting North West Air Ambulance H08 which had landed on the fell below. Further treatment was administered by the NWAA paramedics, before the casualty was transferred to the Cumberland Infirmary for further treatment.

Two walkers were descending Haystacks towards Innominate Tarn when one slipped descending a rocky step and took a short tumbling fall landing heavily on their lower back. The Team made their way in from Dubs Hut at the top of the Honister Mine track. The casualty was assessed and carefully packaged to ensure their spine was immobilised. Due to the rough ground and potential nature of the injury, the Team Leader requested a helicopter to assist with evacuation. The Team was met at Black Beck Tarn by Helimed H08 of the Great North Air Ambulance Service, who kindly transported the casualty to Lancaster for further treatment.

Location | Rannerdale Knotts |
As the casualty’s ankle in Callout 28 was being treated, the Team received a second call to a person who had dislocated/fractured their ankle descending nearby Rannerdale Knotts. Without enough Team members on the hill to treat and extract both casualties simultaneously, the Team Leader requested assistance from our colleagues at Keswick MRT, who quickly sent through a vehicle of their own Team members to assist.
Two NWAS ambulances arrived quickly to transport the casualties to hospital separately. Many thanks to both Keswick MRT and the North West Ambulance Service for their prompt responses.

A walker set out to ascend Scafell from Seathwaite on the 8th May but did not return as expected. The alarm was raised in the early hours of the 9th and Wasdale Mountain Rescue initiated a search with neighbouring Teams. As it became apparent that a wider search with more resource was required, all twelve Lake District Teams were requested to support the search. Cockermouth were tasked with the fells around Honister and over to Great End, in atmospheric conditions.
